Bertha Herring (20 December 1880 – 2 January 1993) was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.

Biography

Bertha Herring was born in Charleston, South Carolina, USA on 20 December 1880. She moved to Florida when an early age. She went school for only two or three years before dropping out to help on her parents' farm.

She married Sam Herring and had 12 children. Her husband died in the 1930s. In 1974, she moved to St. Petersburg to live with her daughter Gertrude Jelks. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

She was never in a hospital until 1983 when she was admitted to Bayfront Medical Center for complications of a cold. She moved to the Laurels Rehabilitation Center, a nursing home in St. Petersburg in 1988.

She was mentioned on her 110th birthday on NBC's Today show. Additionally, at one of her birthday parties she received a certificate from former president Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

Bertha Herring died in her sleep in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA on 2 January 1993 at the age of 112 years, 13 days. She is survived by three daughters Gertrude Jelks, Catherine Murray and Lessie Jones; one son Charlie Herring; 38 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-great-grandchildren.
