Audrey Grogan (17 July 1911 – 4 January 2021) was a British centenarian who is one of the oldest victims of the oldest victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biography
Audrey Grogan was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, UK on 17 July 1911. She was orphaned at the age of three after her parents died from Tuberculosis. She moved into an orphanage and grew up not knowing most of her extended family in England and Australia until later in life when she became an assistant nurse.
In 1947, she made application to emigrate to Australia. She travelled to the country a number of times between 1949 and 1951. But she returned to England to marry John Grogan, a widower, in 1961 in Colchester. The couple met when she was working at a hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia. The couple had no children.
She moved into Blackbrook Care Home in November 2018.
In July 2020, she celebrated her 109th birthday with a special performance from world famous singer Katherine Jenkins.
Audrey Grogan died from COVID-19 in Dedham, Essex, England, UK on 4 January 2021 at the age of 109 years, 171 days.
