Ants Ilus (20 September 1901 – 3 February 2006) was an Estonian centenarian who was the oldest known man in Estonia at time of his death. He also was the last surviving veteran of Estonian War of Independence.

Biography

Ants Ilus was born in Pinska, Viljandimaa, Governorate of Estonia, Russian Empire (now Estonia) on 20 September 1901. His parents were Johan Ilus and Reet (née Hurt) Ilus. He had four siblings.

He married Alma Siim. He got widowed in 1996.

At the age of 17, in the summer of 1919, he was deployed to the Estonian People's Army's Viljandi Defense Battalion, from where he was allowed to return home after his victory over the Landeswehr. In the fall, Ilus was mobilized again, after which he served on the border with Latvia. In 1920, after demobilization, she remained in the army until the fall of 1921.

In 1922, he was awarded the War of Independence Memorial Medal. From 1923 to 1961, he worked as a railroad worker and senior repairman on the narrow gauge railway in Moisakula.

In 1940, the Republic of Estonia awarded him the White Star Medal Class II for his good work. In the 1950s, Ants built a house in Nomme, Tallinn where he lived until his death.

In 2001, as one of the last living veterans of the War of Independence, he was awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle with Class III swords. He became the oldest known living man in Estonia following the death of 103 year-old Karl Viilu on 12 January 2005.

Ants Ilus died in Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia on 3 February 2006 at the age of 104 years, 136 days. Following his death, 103-year-old Martin Selli (1902–2006) became the oldest known living man in Estonia.
