Centenarian

Antal Ribnikar [Hungarian: Ribnikár Antal] (25 January 1910 – 24 March 2018) was an Austrian-Hungarian centenarian who was the oldest living man in Hungary at the time of his death.

Biography

Antal was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria) on 25 January 1910. He was a foster child and did not know his parents. He was brought up by several foster families. His last foster father, a tailor, had a great impact on Antal, as he chose the same profession at the age of 19.

Antal set up his own workshop in Vasvar. During WWII, he sewed uniforms. At the end of the war, he was sent to the death row, but was able to escape. Antal married Maria Szabo in 1942. Their only child, Katalin, was born in 1946. The family moved to Szombathely in 1949. Afterwards, he worked as a shop assistant and then as a civil servant at the border control. He retired in 1970, but continued to work at a post office.

In his old age, Antal was sort of a handyman, he was reported to have been capable of repairing everything. After his wife’s death in 1994, he lived alone and mainly worked in his garden. He moved to Lukacshaza to his daughter in 2002.

As his health had started to decline, he moved into a care home in Koszeg at the age of 104, where he was really loved by the personnel.

Antal became the oldest living male in Hungary upon Miklos Angelus’s death on 31 December 2016. He eventually died in Koszeg, Vas County, Hungary on 24 March 2018 at the age of 108 years, 58 days.
