Aída Gemaque Mendes (20 November 1909 – 9 April 2020), known as Grandma Iaià, was a Brazilian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography

Aida Gemaque Mendes claims to have been born in Chaves, Para, Brazil, on 20 November 1909. Her parents were Manoel Mendes Gemaque and Antonia de Oliveira Gemaque. She moved to Macapa, Amapa in the 1950s.

In 2010, she became the oldest woman to parachute jump, a record that subsequently surpassed herself until her last jump in late 2015.

In 2016, Aida Mendes became the oldest Olympic torchbearer ever. The previous record holder was Alexander Kaptarenko (1912-2014), who was 101 at the time when he participated as a torchbearer in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Aida Gemaque Mendes died due to a cardiorespiratory arrest in Macapa, Amapa, Brazil on 9 April 2020 at the age of 110 years, 141 days.
