Biography

Early Life

Mason was born on 24 September 1895 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. She attended school until the age of 13, whereupon she moved to Bradford, West Yorkshire, and worked in an off-licence. In 1914, married John Mason, a miner, after which they lived together in Upton, West Yorkshire. The couple had five children and were married until John's death in 1962. During this time, she worked making sandwiches at seaside resort Butlins.

Later Life

Mason outlived all of her children, and attributed her long life to "eating bread and dripping with salt every day" along with "clean living". Mason lived independently until the age of 110, after which she moved into a nursing home in Upton, West Yorkshire, England. She had an aunt who lived to the age of 104.

Mason became the oldest living person in England following the death of Emmeline Brice on 26 July 2006. She later became the oldest living person in the whole of the United Kingdom following the death of 111-year-old Scotswoman Annie Knight on 27 November 2006. She also became the last surviving British person born in 1895. Mason died on 9 February 2007 at the age of 111 years, 138 days. Following her death, Florrie Baldwin became the UK's oldest living person.
