Abdoulaye N’Diaye (1894 — 10 November 1998) was a Senegalese centenarian.
Biography[]
Abdoulaye N’Diaye was born in 1894 in village of Thiowor, Louga region, Senegal. He fought in World War I after joining the French army in 1914 and worked as a sharpshooter. He was enlisted after showing his prowess as a wrestler, working as a camel driver, after a wrestling match in which he was "invincible". He was part of an infantry unit known as the "Senegalese Tirailleurs" (Senegalese Shooters) which took part in the 1915 campaign to open the Turkish Dardanelles strait between Europe and Asia. He was taken from Dakar to Casablanca and he fought in Somme and Verdun, where he was wounded. After the war, he went home and returned to his work as a farmer. Before his 104th birthday he was decorated with the prestigious Legion d'Honneur, France's highest honour. Abdoulaye N’Diaye died in Dakar, Senegal on 10 November 1998 at the age of 104 years.
